Dallas to Fort Worth by Car

Distance, drive time and the main routes between the Metroplex’s two big downtowns.

Downtown Dallas to downtown Fort Worth is about 32 miles, a drive of roughly 41 minutes in light traffic. The most direct route follows Interstate 30 through Grand Prairie and Arlington for almost the whole way. A slightly longer alternative uses TX-183, where you can choose the tolled TEXpress lanes, and TX-121: about 36 miles and a similar time in light traffic. Rush hour in either direction can add a lot of time. Arlington’s stadiums sit roughly halfway, and DFW Airport is about 20 miles from downtown Dallas and 24 from downtown Fort Worth.

The routes

Interstate 30 is the straight line between the two downtowns, passing through Grand Prairie and Arlington. It carries most of the trip, about 29 of the 32 miles.

TX-183 and TX-121 run further north, along DFW Airport’s south side, and suit trips that start near Irving or the airport. Parts of TX-183 have TEXpress lanes, which are tolled, with prices that change with demand.

Letting someone else drive

A chauffeured car takes the driving and the parking off your hands, which matters most for evenings in Fort Worth’s Stockyards or Sundance Square and games in Arlington. With DFW Black Limo, a one-way sedan trip starts at $170 (the 2-hour minimum at $85 per hour). For a round trip with dinner or meetings in between, book hourly as-directed service so the same chauffeur stays with you: 4 hours is $340 in a sedan or $460 in the Chevrolet Suburban, before gratuity, tolls and fees.

Tips for the drive

  • Weekday rush hours are the slowest times in both directions.
  • Game and concert nights in Arlington slow I-30 around the stadiums, so check the event calendar before you set a time.
  • Catching a flight on the way? DFW Airport sits roughly between the two cities; see how early to get to DFW.
